Programs & Services Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP)Voice Over Internet Protocol (VoIP) is a new category of technology that enables people to make telephone calls via the Internet. Voice signals are converted to packets of data, which are transmitted over data networks (like CommunityNet or the Internet), hence avoiding the long distance charges of the traditional, public-switched telephone network. Over the next five to ten years, VoIP will likely replace traditional voice telephone systems like Centrex and local PBX systems. Gartner estimates approximately 90 per cent of all new corporate phone systems will be VoIP enabled by 2008. VoIP holds a number of potential advantages over traditional telephone systems:
