The private sector receives more than 60 per cent of the government's annual IT spending.

The ITO is a key participant and resource for the government's services to the citizens of Saskatchewan. The ITO works with other government ministries and agencies to find ways to improve the delivery of provincial public services in Saskatchewan.

The ITO initiated and is one of the key management bodies for CommunityNet, Saskatchewan's world-class, public sector, high-speed Internet system. It is now working with SaskTel to expand the network to people and communities throughout the province.

The Office of Geomatics Coordination (OGC) operates as a sub-branch of the ITO. The office coordinates, promotes and facilitates the development, effective use, and sharing of geographic information and supports the Deputy Minister's Geomatics Council (DMGC).

The ITO is responsible for management of the Government of Saskatchewan central Web portal and works with other ministries and agencies on a variety of Web-based initiatives and issues.

The ITO is working with the private sector to encourage growth in Saskatchewan's IT industry. Three key areas identified that will spur expansion in the sector include capacity building, comercialization and capitalization. A number of provincial and federal government programs are available to the IT sector in each of these three areas.

The ITO is leading a voluntary IT consolidation initiative that will see it assume responsibility for all aspects of IT service delivery (help desk, infrastructure and application development) for Saskatchewan executive government ministries and agencies.

The ITO supports the work of the Access and Privacy Branch of Saskatchewan Justice in its mandate of providing leadership on government access and privacy, particularly in the area of Web-based access and privacy issues.

The ITO is the lead agency in ensuring the security of government IT systems and protection of public information entrusted to government ministries.

The ITO is working in collaboration with the Saskatchewan Government Services on transitioning executive government's traditional telephone services to VoIP technology.

Residents and visitors to the downtown business districts and post-secondary institutions of Saskatchewan’s four largest centres are now able to access the country's largest wireless Internet network – Saskatchewan! Connected – free-of-charge.
